It appears Roger Clemens isn't going down without a fight.
After news broke yesterday that the former Red Sox legend would be indicted for lying to Congress about his use of steroids and human growth hormone, Clemens fired back on his Twitter account with the following:
I never took HGH or Steroids. And I did not lie to Congress. I look forward to challenging the Governments [sic] accusations, and hope people will keep an open mind until trial. I appreciate all the support I have been getting. I am happy to finally have my day in court.
Rocket
Yes, he signed it "Rocket."
For whatever reason, remember, the Red Sox have not awarded Clemens' No. 21 to any player since he left the team after the 1996 season. Maybe there was always a lingering belief he may one day return to the team, or perhaps it's just so the number can retired down the road (nobody has worn Pedro Martinez's No. 45 since he left in '04). But does that matter any longer? Clemens' Boston legacy is dead, and has been for some time.
Clemens still shares the franchise record with Cy Young for wins with 192. That's the same number of career wins for Tim Wakefield, but only 178 of those came in Boston. There's an outside shot the 43-year-old knuckleballer could surpass Clemens if he plays next season, but not likely.
