I'm a sucker for vintage travel posters, which is why I enjoyed the current exhibit at the Boston Public Library tremendously. Now, the Copley Square branch has added another exhibit related to the popular "Away We Go," with an extensive collection of Boston-related postcards from early 20th century on display.
"Greetings from Boston" highlights what the library considers the "Golden Age" of postcards, pointing out that in 1908 alone, Americans mailed an astonishing 677 million of them. What we see in the images is a very different Boston, with many of the postcards around 100 years old. For instance, there are five decades of images featuring Copley Square, and the changes in civic design and architecture is stunning.
I can't even remember the last time I received a non-digital postcard in the mail, so the exhibit is a welcome nostalgic trip. "Greetings from Boston" runs through March.
