Mass Pike Pru Tunnel Under Construction

This photo shows the Boston skyline and Mass PikeIf you're driving downtown through late April - checking out open houses, doing some shopping in the Back Bay, or seeing a show at Symphony Hall, be prepared to take alternate routes: The Mass Pike will be reduced to one lane in each direction at the Pru Tunnel during the following weekends:

  • March 21-23
  • March 28-30
  • April 4-6
  • April 25-27

Closures will take place from 9 p.m. on Friday evenings through 5 a.m. on Monday mornings to accommodate construction on the Pru Tunnel's ceiling. Work during the Pru Tunnel Suspended Ceiling Project will remove the entire suspended ceiling under the Hynes Convention Center and replace tiles as needed.

The Massachusetts Convention Center Authority (MCCA) recommends using the Sumner Tunnel if you're headed to Logan Airport and taking Storrow Drive if coming from the west. Heavy commercial vehicles should take I-95 to I-93 during the affected weekends, and pedestrians and drivers should be aware of increased traffic throughout the Back Bay.

Over the coming weekends, whether you're headed downtown or needing to drive on the Pike, give yourself some extra time to accommodate the inevitable delays. Additionally, you can check the MCCA website for the latest updates on closures and traffic, as well as progress on the construction itself.

Will you be affected by the Mass Pike construction Pru tunnel lane closures? Do you have any alternate route recommendations? Share your thoughts by leaving a comment below!
