The 2006 Life is good. ® Pumpkin Festival

A Photo Gallery of the Day Boston Set a World Record

From Sonja Cohen, About.com

The Life is good. ® Pumpkin Festival on Oct. 21, 2006, was one for the record books—literally. After two unsuccessful attempts, Boston broke the world record this year for the most jack-o-lanterns lit in one place. Boston Common was aglow with the light of the record-smashing 30,128 jack-o-lanterns; the previous world record was 28,952, set by Keene, N.H., in 2003.

About 100,000 people gathered throughout the day to enjoy the festive atmosphere. There were plenty of activities for kids, including a costume parade, a pumpkin maze, face painting, scarecrow stuffing, and of course, pumpkin carving. Bands played periodically from the stage, and various booths sold snacks, merchandise, or provided information about the event and its sponsors. The event raised about $250,000 for Camp Sunshine, which holds retreats for children with life-threatening illnesses.

If you missed the event or just want to relive some of the highlights, you can enjoy this pumpkin festival photo gallery.
