Boston is a city of truly devoted sports fans. It is not uncommon for several generations of families to follow a team. Boston sports fans know everything about their team—the players, the stats, the history, the highs and lows—but if you're new to the area, or are just now getting interested in sports, here's a quick introduction to Boston's professional sports teams.

Boston Bruins

The Bruins are Boston's professional hockey team, a part of the Northeast Division of the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL). The Bruins entered the NHL in 1924 as the first American-based expansion franchise. They play home games at the TD Banknorth Garden. Some notable Bruins players have included Eddie Shore, John Bucyk, and Bobby Orr. The Bruins have won five Stanley Cups (1928-29, 1938-39, 1940-41, 1969-70, 1971-72). Their mascot is Blades the Bruin, a bear, and team colors are black and gold.

Boston Celtics

The Celtics are Boston's professional basketball team, which plays in the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference in the National Basketball Association (NBA). The Boston Celtics play home games at TD Banknorth Garden. The team has 16 championship wins, the most of any NBA team. Some notable Celtics have included Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, John Havlicek, and coach Red Auerbach. The team's mascot is Lucky, a leprechaun, and their colors are green, white, black, and occasionally gold.

Boston Red Sox

The Red Sox are Boston's professional baseball team and a member of Major League Baseball's American League Eastern Division. The team was established in 1901 and has played at historic Fenway Park since 1912. Famous for die-hard fans and an 86-year "curse" (broken in 2004), the team has won the World Series seven times (1903, 1912, 1915, 1916, 1918, 2004, and 2007). Some notable players have included Cy Young, Ted Williams, Carl Yastrzemski, and Jason Varitek. Their mascot is Wally the green monster, and team colors are red and white. They are sometimes referred to as the BoSox or the Sox.

New England Patriots

The Patriots are New England's professional football team, part of the Eastern Division of the American Football Conference (AFC) in the National Football League (NFL). Founded in 1960, the New England Patriots have won the Super Bowl three times, in 2001 (XXXVI), 2003 (XXXVIII), and 2004 (XXXIX). Some notable players have included John Hannah and Tom Brady. The Patriots are the highest scoring team in NFL history. The team plays home games at Gillette Stadium. Their mascot is Pat Patriot and the team colors are blue, silver, red, and white. They are commonly referred to as the Pats.

New England Revolution

The New England Revolution is the Northeast's professional soccer club and a member of the Eastern Conference of Major League Soccer. The team plays its home games at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Mass. Some of the team's notable players have included Taylor Twellman and Matt Reis. The Revolution's mascot is Slyde the fox, and their colors are navy, blue, and red. The team is sometimes referred to as the Revs.
