Great Boston-Area Taquerias

From Vincent Poon, for About.com

As a native San Diegan, there are times when all I want is a good, cheap Mexican fix. Though it can be a tricky proposition as there are many different schools of Mexican food, several Boston-area taquerias offer speedy service, relatively authentic food, and cheap prices. Here are five personal favorites that I've enjoyed over the years:

Anna's Taqueria

There's a reason why Anna's Taqueria has been named "Best of Boston, Burrito" so many times over the past several years. The most popular item is the Super Burrito, which is filled to the point of bursting with deliciously prepared meats (the slightly lemony chicken is my favorite) or freshly grilled vegetables, light and fluffy rice, tender beans, and a variety of salsas and guacamole. The best part, those award-winning burritos are a bargain at less than $5!

El Pelon Taqeuria

Although El Pelon's standard Mexican fare has always been a safe bet, what makes this place stand out for me are the specialty tacos. The caramelos offer a tasty mix of spicy and savory with the use of hot sauce and grilled steak, while the rajas con queso are an excellent choice for vegetarians who are sick of getting generic mixed vegetable tacos. I personally enjoy the pescado tacos, which are the best-tasting fish tacos that I've ever eaten in Boston. With its plentiful picnic-style outdoor seating, this is a definite must for summertime eating on a budget.

Viva Burrito

Situated near Boston's bustling North Station area, this popular lunchtime spot is well known for its incredibly juicy (and slightly messy) burritos and tacos. The food is often cooked to order, so you know that the chicken you're about to eat was probably cooked minutes ago versus hours ago. The prices may be slightly higher than other local taquerias, but the variety of menu items and the generous portions more than make up for the few extra dollars.

Tacos Lupita

One of the most treasured experiences I've had was discovering this little hole-in-the-wall gem located off the beaten path in Somerville, Mass. The food is very much the real deal as evidenced by the use of tongue and chorizo in the burritos and tacos. Although the décor certainly won't win any style points, the real specialty is Tacos Lupita's traditional and delicious food. For those looking for truly authentic Mexican food, I highly recommend this taqeuria.

Boca Grande Taqeuria

Similar to Anna's Taqueria, Boca Grande's food is expertly prepared, service is swift and efficient, and the prices are incredibly reasonable. The true strength comes out in the smaller details of this restaurant, which offers hard-to-find-in-Boston tamales, as well as tofu for those who don't care for meat, and perfectly filling enchiladas. With various location scattered across Boston and Cambridge, this is a great option for a quick bite to eat.
