Free Friday Flicks

Free Films at Boston's Hatch Shell

By Sonja Cohen, About.com

A Boston tradition, each summer people flock to the Hatch Shell on Friday evenings to watch a free showing of a popular film under the stars. Screenings feature a family friendly mix of newer and older films, such as Wallace & Gromit: Curse of the Wererabbit, Ghostbusters, and Grease.

A different film shows, rain or shine, at sunset every Friday from mid June through August. It is great fun to grab a blanket or some lawn chairs, pack a picnic, and head down to the Charles River esplanade for a little free entertainment and fresh air. It's always a good idea to get there a little early to stake out the best spot and see what free goodies are being offered at the WBZ tent.

Free Friday Flicks are sponsored by WBZ NewsRadio 1030, CBS-4, and the Department of Conservation and Recreation. Due to copyright issues, they don’t announce the names of the films they'll be showing, but usually post fairly obvious hints on the WBZ website. You can also call the WBZ Free Friday Flicks Hotline for weekly movie information: (617) 787-7200.
