The city bought the land for the old Central Burying Ground in 1756. Among those buried here are composer William Billings, artist Gilbert Stuart, restaurateur Monsieur Julien, and soldiers killed during the Battle of Bunker Hill. During subway construction in 1894, the remains of about 910 people were unearthed and later reinterred with a tablet marking the spot.
