Hanover Street is the North End's main commercial thoroughfare, bustling with people and cars heading to its various shops and restaurants. In September 2006 the
Boston Globe reported that a city councilor, backed by tourism officials and the mayor, has plans to convert the street into an Italian piazza, with strolling violinists, artist stalls, and tables in the middle of the street. The plan, meant to increase tourism, will be tested in the Spring of 2007 when they block the road to vehicular traffic on the weekends.
